Nancy Holt, een Amerikaanse kunstenares die bekend staat om haar innovatieve verkenning van licht en ruimte, zal gevierd worden in de uitgebreide tentoonstelling „Circles of Light“ in de Gropius Bau in Berlijn, die in maart 2024 opent.
Deze tentoonstelling toont haar baanbrekende gebruik van natuurlijk en kunstmatig licht in installaties op locatie in de afgelopen 25 jaar en benadrukt haar baanbrekende benadering in de kunstwereld.
Ecologische thema’s integreren
Vanaf het begin van haar carrière integreerde Holt ecologische thema’s in haar werk, waarbij ze elementen zoals de rotatie van de aarde, astronomie, tijd en plaats integreerde. Deze aspecten zijn bedoeld om het perspectief van kijkers uit te dagen en hen aan te moedigen om verder te kijken dan het bekende. Een van haar meest iconische werken, „Sun Tunnels“ (1973-76), gelegen in de Great Basin woestijn van Utah, is een voorbeeld van haar toewijding om kunst te mengen met de natuurlijke omgeving.
De Dia Art Foundation is de trotse eigenaar van dit historische project, dat zich uitstrekt over een woestijngebied van 40 hectare dat Holt in 1973 kocht. Bezoekers worden aangemoedigd om Holt’s „laat geen sporen na“ beleid te volgen wanneer ze de site bezoeken, met respect voor de natuurlijke omgeving.
Vroeg leven en carrière
Holt werd in 1938 geboren in Worcester, Massachusetts. Ze studeerde biologie aan de Tufts University voordat ze eind jaren 1950 naar New York verhuisde. Tijdens haar vroege carrière reisde ze veel door de Verenigde Staten en het buitenland en documenteerde haar observaties door middel van concrete poëzie en fotografie. Dit vroege werk evolueerde naar een meer genuanceerd begrip van perceptie, zoals blijkt uit haar baanbrekende Locators-serie (1971) en de daaropvolgende installaties Holes of Light (1973) en Mirrors of Light (1974).
Het verkennen van licht en ruimte
Het artistieke traject van Nancy Holt werd gekenmerkt door een toenemende interesse in de wisselwerking tussen natuurlijke elementen en licht. Naarmate ze dieper op dit thema inging, begon ze te experimenteren met het integreren van zonlicht in haar installaties, wat uiteindelijk leidde tot het iconische Sun Tunnels-project. Deze interesse in licht en natuurlijke elementen bleef gedurende haar hele carrière bestaan, met als hoogtepunt de installaties op locatie in de tentoonstelling „Circles of Light“.
Erkenning van verborgen systemen
Holts nalatenschap in Europa is veelbetekenend, omdat haar werken onze afhankelijkheid van vaak verborgen technische systemen onthullen. Haar woorden en kunstwerken erkennen vaak deze afhankelijkheid en brengen de ingewikkelde verbindingen tussen natuurlijke en door de mens gemaakte omgevingen aan het licht. De tentoonstelling „Circles of Light“ in Gropius Bau zal ongetwijfeld licht werpen op Holts blijvende invloed op de kunstwereld en haar innovatieve gebruik van licht en ruimte en haar bijdragen aan ecologische en perceptuele kunst vieren.
